Food – muesli, bananas, juice, apples, 2 x tuna sandwiches, beans on toast.

Exercise – approx 27k in 3.5 hours.

Just wasn’t meant to be, last night. When I set off I felt like Cristiano Ronaldo, by the time I finished I felt like his car.

My left leg is almost 100%, but my right must have decided it was his turn. I was travelling fine when I got to Surry Hills, but once I turned to head back my right calf started to complain. I pushed through it okay, but I was having trouble finding (cheap) water and just past the two hour mark I was feeling a bit out of it and the calf was no good. I finally found some water and pushed a bit further, but it was a cold night and everything was seizing up at that stage. Walked the last 5 or 6 k to home, so my time was blown out hugely. If I recover okay I’ll try the same route on Sunday. Can’t afford to get too down with only a month to go.

Lesson learned. Next time (even) more stretching, and get the water in early, not when it’s too late.

Food – muesli, apple, bananana, juice, 2 x tuna sandwiches, beans on toast, 2 x muesli bars.

Exercise – Jimnauseaum. 30 minutes biking, 40 minutes playing kazoo.

+++

Went to the doctor about my knee/hamstring, and he suggested rest and some anti-inflammatory tablets. And, hey presto! I was feeling back to normal within a day. Going to go for a long run tomorrow night (aiming for 27/28), so if I recover from that well then I think I’ll be just about on track. Cutting it fine, but that’s just the way it’s turned out.

I’ve been eyeing up the next challenge, and so far this is looking tempting. It lands on my 30th birthday : D

Food – juice, muesli bar, sugary baked delights, (lean) burger in wholemeal bun.. day ain’t over yet.

Exercise – none.

+++

The very end of my hamstring muscle, right behind the knee, has been complaining since the run on Wednesday. I really wanted to push for another big run tomorrow but it’s not looking good. At this rate I’m missing some vital training so I’m getting a bit worried. Last thing I want to do is chicken out, but it wouldn’t be as bad as running 20k and limping around for 3 months afterwards.

Will keep it rested for now and update when I’m back in the mix. Which will be soon I hope. Keep your fingers crossed.

Food – yoghurt/muesli, apple, juice, muesli bar, chicken burger w/ chips, beans on toast.

Exercise – about 25k in 2.5 hours (same course as 29/07).

+++

Note to self: missing even one long run is detrimental to your training plan.

2nd note to self: you can run all you want, but you’re not seeing your abs until you cut out the burgers and chips.

Powered along during the middle section of last night’s run, but felt strangely off balance for the first hour. The last 30 minutes was all about the internal arguments…

“You can walk for 1 minute when you get to the top of Franklin Avenue.”

“Walk when I see the top of Franklin, got it.”

“When you get to the top of Franklin!”

“Okay, okay…”

Sore calves this morning, but luckily I’m booked in for physio tonight. The deceptively strong women they employ will inflict so much damage on my thigh muscles that I’ll forget all about the calves. Aiming to run for 2.45 on Sunday, all going well, and then work up to 3 hours on Sunday 30th, aiming for 30ks. Nice numbering, eh? That will give me about 3 weeks of tapering, which seems to be the way to go.

Here’s my sister and I cruising to the finish at the City to Surf. Hate the game, not the players.

Food – pretty good over the weekend.

Exercise – City 2 Surf! Didn’t you see the papers?

+++

Was a still a bit giddy with the tail end of man flu on Sunday morning, but I couldn’t miss out. Met my sister and her fella at about 8:45 in the city and we eventually got going around 9:40 I think. We haven’t got our official times yet but I think we ran the 14k in about 1:40, which is no mean feat given the gruelling hills on the course. Everyone was in good form though, and the weather held up its end of the bargain. Sushi and giggles after the event, then bus home and a power nap.

Still a bit sniffly so will probably take it easy tonight, but need to work out how to fit in another 2:30 this week. 6 weeks to go and I’ve got plenty of work to do.

Looking forward to it.

Food (05/08) – Muesli, juice, banana, apple, muesli bar, chicken stir-fry, beans, toast.

Exercise (05/08) – 14k in about 90 minutes.

+++

At the physio before the run. The so-called massage has left bruises on my leg! They also taped my knee before I went running (just to hold the kneecap slightly to one side), and between the two things my leg feels much better today. Woke up with a bit of a cold though, so will be desperately trying to shake that before this weekend’s run. I wonder if my newly shaved and therefore exposed knee was the cause of the cold? It is very smooth, I have to say. And shapely.

Hard to know when to fit in the big runs over the last 6 weeks of training. I might extend the City 2 Surf on Sunday, or else chuck in a major run next Wednesday – I don’t want to fall too far behind this late in the game. As it is I don’t feel like I’ve done enough.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still going to do it!

Food – mix of the good and the not-so-good over the last 3 days.

Exercise – 10k run on Saturday with my sister, 90 mins of football on Sunday.

+++

Starting to get a bit nervous now. Not a million miles away and it feels like there’s a lot to do. Went to the physio yesterday to sort out some knee clickery. Nothing too serious, the long and short of it is that I’ve never really done enough stretching and the muscle on the outside of my left leg is paying for it now. Lots of stretching and massaging should sort it out.

Going for a shorter run tomorrow night, then my sister, her boyfriend and I are running the City 2 Surf (14k) on Sunday. Looking forward to the japes – I’ve been promised a face full of energy drink more than once.

Now that the football season is over I’ll be back to some form of exercise/treatment everyday. Just over 6 weeks to go and I’m starting to feel the butterflies.

Food – muesli, banana, apple, yoghurt, muesli bar, 2 x ham/cheese/salad sandwiches, juice, and dinner was a toasted cheese sandwich. Couldn’t handle anything else.

Exercise – about 24 kms in about 2.5 hours.

+++

MMMmmmalright! Felt much more like a real live runner tonight. Well, for the first two hours at least. I was genuinely enjoying it for the first hour too, bouncing along and trying to decide what my celebration move should be. I can’t do hands in the air, for this reason, so I might settle for some pointing and a round of high fives for anyone who’s up for it.

I came home reasonably strong. It helped to focus on correcting my form, I found. Still, after I got in the door and had a shower I felt a bit sick for about an hour. That will probably go in time. Just have to stay. on. target.

Food – muesli/yoghurt, banana, apple, muesli bar, 2 x tuna melts, bowl o’ pasta.

Exercise – Just over 20k in about 2hrs 30 mins.

+++

Hmm. Really thought I’d gone a lot further tonight than I actually had. I ran from Maroubra to Sydney and back, which I was hoping would clock up about 23k, but I think between extra hills and a lot more traffic lights I was a good bit slower than last week. Plus, it rained fairly hard for the first hour. Ah that’s enough excuses – 2 months to go so plenty more running to get me on track. Felt very sore and sick at the end of this one – every week I think it’s gotten as hard as it can get, and every week… SURPRISE!

There are plenty of moments where I’m moving along and feeling energetic and untroubled, but the last 10 minutes really tests you – every time.

2 games of football this weekend so I might rest tomorrow. If I have the energy.

Food – muesli/yoghurt, juice, banana, apple, muesli bar, 2 x ham/cheese/salad sandwiches, tin o’ beans on toast.

Exercise – gymnopodie. 30 mins cardio, 40 minutes trying to lick my elbow.

+++

Exercise bike felt a bit easier tonight, and I lifted some slightly heavier weights than usual. I’ll have to get back into a regular routine though, 5 days off is far too much this close to the marathon. Long run tomorrow and possibly two games of football this weekend, so I’ll be punished for my lethargy.

I’m vaguely wondering about what to do next. Running takes up a lot of time and I think after this one I might cool it on long distances for a while. Boxing? Rock climbing? Surfing? Nice to have options.
